The impact of your stay

Kwandwe is committed to biodiversity conservation and rural livelihoods. This is enabled through a sustainable tourism business, which is underpinned by a leading safari experience. In these challenging times, their robust business model together with a dynamic management approach preserves Kwandwe for generations to come.

Kwandwe, unlike any other safari experiences in Classic Portfolio, is privately owned and managed land and wildlife. While this model gives great flexibility, it also comes with great responsibility.

Every stay contributes through:
  • Paying R 650 per person per night (R 300 per child 16 years and younger per night) Conservation & Community Levy. Funds raised are equally split between reserve conservation and community development.
  • Over and above the levy, 35% of the accommodation rate paid by guests is allocated towards Kwandwe’s 5 Pillars of conservation.
  • Guests can get involved in the 5 Pillars through:
  1. Grow: Conserving bio-diversity and the ecology of the area. Re-plant spekboom, a wonder plant that is endemic to the Eastern Cape, on game drives and walking safaris and observe flora rehabilitation in action.
  2. Protect: Safeguarding vulnerable species. Take part in a rhino conservation drive and track the endangered animals on foot. Join a specialist Rhino Conservation Safari (extra cost) and get hands on with DNA sampling, micro-chipping and notching rhinos.
  3. Engage: Supporting and developing the local community. Visit the Mgcamabele Centre and the Ubunye pre-school located on Kwandwe, and learn more about their community projects in the Eastern Cape.
  4. Collaborate: Expanding wildlife populations beyond the borders of Kwandwe. Wildlife swaps ensure genetic diversity and translocations support moving animals to other protected areas. Request to be added to the conservation mailing list and keep up to date with planned projects and how to get involved.
  5. Research: Partnering with academic institutions to conduct biodiversity research. Set up a camera trap and inspect other footage to understand how we use motion detection cameras to survey moments and territories and understand more about certain species.
ACCESS

Fly:
Scheduled flights from Port Elizabeth Airport to Kwandwe’s private airstrip are available. There is also a 2km tarred runway for private charters.

Private charters can also be arranged from Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Drive:
From Port Elizabeth, it is a 1 hour and 45 minute drive; transfers can be arranged.

Self-drive guests leave their vehicles in the car park at Heatherton Towers, and are transferred to their lodge or villa.

A diverse and flexible safari

Sharing our knowledge of the bush is our passion. Our team of highly-qualified rangers offer a range of authentic activities, from game drives to rhino conservation, walking safaris to fishing expeditions, and will do their utmost to delight at every turn.

SAFARI ACTIVITIES
Fill your days with the thrill of intimate wildlife encounters and authentic experiences, and your evenings with surprise moments and unforgettable dinners.
Twice daily game drives

Explore the reserve on early morning and late afternoon game drives in an open 4×4 safari vehicle. An armed ranger and tracker team will share their extensive knowledge as you track the Big Five and a variety of wildlife. Morning drives begin as dawn breaks over the Great Fish River as the predators finish their nocturnal hunts, whilst in the late afternoon, wildlife can be spotted coming down to the river to drink.

Included in the daily rate

Walking safaris

There’s nothing quite like experiencing the bush on foot with armed ranger and tracker team by your side. Set out to look for big game (white rhino, black rhino, elephant and buffalo) for the ultimate thrill, or alternatively, immerse yourself in the dense euphorbia and enjoy the fascinating environments up close, with no engine to distract you. Walks usually last from 3 to 4 hours and depart in the cooler early mornings.

Included in the daily rate

Fishing

Kwandwe offers a variety of catch-and-release fishing options, either in still water or in the tumbling waters of the Great Fish River. Try your hand at catching large mouth bass on artificial lures, or fly rod in the reserve’s largest dam in a remote and peaceful corner of the reserve. A fun activity for children – as well as the young at heart – fishing expeditions can be tailored to suit your timings and interests.

Included in the daily rate

Campfire cooking

When it comes to barbequing, few countries are as well practised as South Africa! Learn to master the art of the barbeque, or ‘braai’, whilst on safari with us and prepare ingredients and learn about local dishes alongside one of our talented chefs. Then, it’s time to cook up a storm over an open flame…

SPECIALIST SAFARIS
Book a dedicated ranger and private vehicle for a completely flexible, specialist safari, founded on our ethos of conservation in action.
In addition to our daily activities, dedicated specialist rangers are on hand for those who are searching for a private experience. Tailormade to every wish, these specialist experiences include walking, fishing, birding or photographic safaris and are designed to create lasting memories and a connection to the wilds.
Private guide & vehicle

Led by a dedicated ranger and tracker team, booking a private guide and vehicle will ensure a private game viewing experience throughout your stay. Days are entirely up to you and mix and match chosen activities with specialist experiences and down time. Days run from 12:00pm to 12:00pm and private guides and vehicles must be booked for the duration of stay (already included for villa and Ecca Lodge Family Suite stays).

Rhino Monitoring Drive

Be part of a unique insight into how Kwandwe Private Game Reserve’s ecological team monitor and protect our notable population of black and white rhino. Led by one of the eco-team specialists, the 3-4 hour rhino drive focuses on finding and discussing specific individuals in the Kwandwe rhino population, learning about the habits of this threatened species, the issues of rhino poaching, and Kwandwe’s very own conservation efforts.

Rhino Conservation Safari

A three-night, four-day Rhino Conservation Safari offers an opportunity to participate in Kwandwe’s rhino-darting and notching programme. Under the supervision of experts, the rhino is darted in order to plant microchips into the horns and perform ear-notching for future identification – an essential task to ensure the preservation of this endangered species. The best time is generally 1 May – 30 September due to cooler weather conditions, however it can be done all year. The procedure is always subject to the availability of the wildlife management team as well as the availability of rhinos that need to be notched for conservation purposes.

The below experiences require a private guide and vehicle to be booked at an extra cost for the duration of a stay. Rates are in addition to the private guide and vehicle:

Specialist photographic safaris

Book a specialist photographic guide to provide direction when it comes to capturing memories through the lens. Ask questions about camera settings, compositional ideas, and different wildlife scenarios, or simply sit back and connect with your safari experience whilst your guides takes photos for you. The experiences includes a selection of edited photographs in electronic format.

Specialist walking safaris

Allow one of our professional and experienced trail guides to shape your walking safari experience at Kwandwe. Choose to track large game, such as black and white rhino, elephant or buffalo, or immerse yourself in the smaller, often-forgotten aspects of the bush and watch as dung beetles go about their business or trace the pattern of a butterfly’s wings. With a private guide, the choice is yours.

Specialist birding safaris

Spend time looking for those elusive specials and add to your knowledge of South Africa’s birdlife with a specialist birding guide. These guides have detailed insight of where, when and how to find the birds you might be looking for and a an intimate understanding of Kwandwe’s 315 recorded species.
